ABOUT THE PROGRAM

 

Q: Where are Mitacs Step workshops currently offered?

A: Mitacs Step workshops are offered in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.

 

Q: What kind of workshops does the Mitacs Step Program offer?

A: The Mitacs Step program is focused on four core competency areas in Professional Development. These are Leadership and Management, Communications and Relationship Building, Personal and Professional Management and Entrepreneurialism. The individual workshops in the Mitacs Step curriculum build skills in each of these competencies. For more information on our specific workshops please click here.

 

Q: Do Mitacs Step workshops favour some disciplines over others?

A: No. Mitacs Step workshops offer an interdisciplinary approach to professional skills development. Participants will benefit from industry expertise and teaching methods that will give them the skills to succeed while augmenting their academic learning.

 

ELIGIBILITY

 

Q: Who is eligible to participate in Mitacs Step workshops?

A: Mitacs Step workshops are open to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows currently registered at a Canadian university or participating in any Mitacs programming (Accelerate, Elevate, and Globalink). Workshops are also open to past graduate students that have graduated in the past 2 years.

 

Q: I was not born in Canada but attend a Canadian Institution.  Am I eligible to attend Mitacs Step workshops?

A: Yes. As an international graduate student or postdoctoral fellow, you are eligible to attend Mitacs Step workshops in the province in which you are currently attending a Canadian Institution.

 

Q: Am I eligible to participate in workshops outside of my current province?

A:  No. You are only eligible to attend Mitacs Step workshops in the province in which you are currently attending a Canadian Institution.

 

REGISTERING FOR A WORKSHOP

 

Q: How do I register for a workshop?

A: Before registering for a workshop you will need to log in or create a new account here. Once you have logged in/created an account you can now register for workshops by clicking the Register tab.

 

Q: Where can I find a list of upcoming Mitacs Step workshops at my university or in my region?

A: A list of workshops can be found by clicking the Register tab. You can either search for workshops using our calendar or workshop catalogue.

 

Q: Why do I require a credit card to register if Mitacs Step workshops are free of charge?

A: Mitacs Step workshops are free for all participants; however, due to high demand, the preauthorization of a valid credit card is required as part of the registration process and to guarantee your attendance. We can only accept Visa and MasterCard credit cards.

 

Q: Why won’t your registration system accept my credit card?

A: The Mitacs Step registration portal can only accept Visa and MasterCard credit cards from Canadian and American banking institutions.

 

Q: Can I register with a Visa Debit card?

A: No. You can only register with a valid credit card. We can only accept Visa and MasterCard credit cards.

 

Q: Will my credit card ever be charged?

A: Your credit card will be charged a $50.00 “No Show” fee if you register and do not attend the workshop or if you do not cancel before the finalized registration period of 5 calendar days prior to the start date of the workshop.  If you cancel your registration 5 or more days in advance of the workshop, you will not be charged. Additionally, participants that present themselves but do not attend the workshop in full will also be charged a $50.00 “Withdrawal” fee.

 

Q: I do not have a credit card; can I still register for Mitacs Step workshops?

A: Yes. Please contact the Step team for more details.

 

Q: The workshop I am trying to register for is password protected? Can I still register? 

A: Mitacs Step will sometimes password protect a workshop to give priority access to cohorts that are affiliated with Mitacs programs. In some cases the password will be removed once the cohort has registered, so please contact the Step team for more details.

 

REGISTERED VS. WAITING LIST

 

Q: How do I know if I am registered or on the waiting list for a workshop?

A: Following your registration you will receive an email that will notify you if you have a confirmed seat or been placed on the waiting list for a workshop. You may also view your current status by clicking on My Profile followed by the Workshops tab.

 

Q:  I am on the waitlist for a workshop.  How and when will I be notified if/when I have been added to the workshop?

A: If someone cancels, you will be moved to a “Registered” status for the workshop in sequential order from the waitlist and notified via email of your new status. You may also view your current status by clicking on My Profile followed by the Workshops tab.

 

CANCELLING A REGISTRATION

 

Q: How do I cancel my workshop registration(s)?

A: Cancellation instructions can be found here.

 

Q: I am unable to cancel my registration(s), what can I do?

A: Please contact the Step team.

 

ATTENDING A WORKSHOP

 

Q: Can I show up late to Mitacs Step workshop?

A: No. Late participants will not be admitted into the workshop. Late participants may also lose their seats to wait listed participants that are on standby.

 

Q: Can I attend only part of a Mitacs Step workshop?

A: No. Participants are required to attend the workshop in its entirety. Those who choose to not participate for the entire duration of the workshop will be charged a $50.00 “Withdrawal” fee.

 

Q: Can I participate in a Level II Mitacs Step workshop if I have not participated in the Level I workshop?

A: No. If you have not participated in the mandatory Level I pre-requisite, you cannot participate in a Level II workshop.

 

Q: How do I receive acknowledgement of participation in a workshop?

A: You will receive a confirmation email once the workshop is complete that serves as the official record of your participation. Mitacs Step does not issue certificates following the completion of a workshop.

 

WHAT IS A CREDIT CARD PRE-AUTHORIZATION?

 

Q: What is a pre-authorization?

A: A pre-authorization is a temporary hold of a specific amount of the available balance on a credit / debit card. The pre-authorization is NOT a charge and you are not responsible for paying for it.

 

Q: When is the credit card pre-authorized?

A: All credit cards are pre-authorized when a participant registers for a workshop.

 

Q: When does the pre-authorization get released from the credit card?  

A: This depends on your individual credit card. It can take anywhere from 24 hours to up to 3 weeks for the pre-authorization to be removed by your credit card company.
